Air India has announced the indefinite suspension of all flight operations to and from Tel Aviv, Israel, in response to the rapidly escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The decision, which took effect on August 9, comes as a safety measure following the recent surge in conflict in the region.
The airline initially suspended its Tel Aviv flights until August 8, following the assassination of a prominent Hamas leader, which has further fueled tensions between Israel and various groups in the Middle East. With the situation continuing to deteriorate, Air India has now extended the suspension until further notice.
“In view of the current situation in parts of the Middle East, scheduled operation of our flights to and from Tel Aviv are suspended with immediate effect until further notice. We are continuously monitoring the situation and are offering a full refund to our passengers with confirmed bookings for travel to and from Tel Aviv. Safety of our guests and crew remains our topmost priority,” the airline stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
This marks the second time this year that Air India has suspended its Tel Aviv services due to rising tensions in the Middle East. The airline had only recently resumed flights to the Israeli city on March 3, after a nearly five-month suspension caused by previous conflicts in the region.
The current suspension aligns with the actions of several other international airlines that have either canceled or reduced flights to and from Tel Aviv. The heightened risk of a multi-front conflict involving Iran, Israel, and militant groups like Hamas and Hezbollah has significantly impacted air travel to the region, affecting neighboring countries such as Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, and Jordan.
