JetBlue’s new SAF agreement at JFK represents a major advancement in sustainable aviation, enhancing their commitment to eco-friendly flying practices.
JetBlue’s has secured a significant deal for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at New York’s JFK airport through an agreement with World Fuel Services and Valero Marketing and Supply Company. Under this new 12-month contract, JetBlue will receive at least one million gallons of pure SAF, with initial deliveries anticipated to begin in late 2024.
Sara Bogdan, JetBlue’s Managing Director of Sustainability and Environmental Social Governance, highlighted the importance of this agreement, stating, “The introduction of SAF in our home market is a significant step forward, demonstrating increased involvement from major fuel producers and the potential of SAF to effectively combat aviation’s carbon emissions.”
She further emphasized that, “With Valero’s renowned expertise in energy markets and logistics, coupled with existing jet fuel distribution infrastructure, this substantial SAF supply is set to play a crucial role in the industry’s expansion of SAF use.”
SAF, derived from feedstocks such as used cooking oil and other waste materials, can cut aviation emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional jet fuel over its lifecycle.
Valero will mix the pure SAF with conventional jet fuel, with World Fuel managing the distribution to JFK.
Brad Hurwitz, Senior Vice President of Supply and Trading at World Fuel, noted, “Growing the blended SAF market requires comprehensive support across the entire supply chain to achieve the aviation sector’s goals. We are excited to collaborate with JetBlue to introduce blended SAF at one of our major airport hubs, advancing our goal at World Fuel to develop a robust SAF supply network on the US East Coast.”
