Hong Kong International Airport Expands with New Boundaries for Three-Runway System

Effective today, the revisions to the Maps of Airport Area and Restricted Area Orders under the Airport Authority Ordinance (Cap. 483) have been implemented. These updates are critical to accurately reflect the adjustments in the boundaries of both the Airport Area and the Restricted Area. These changes stem from ongoing developments at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), particularly with the adoption of the Three-runway System.

The necessity for these amendments was driven by the expansion and enhancement of facilities at HKIA. As the airport evolves to handle increased traffic and more sophisticated operations, updating the legal frameworks that define its operating areas ensures safety and compliance with international standards.

The updates to these Orders were officially documented and made public through a gazette notice on May 3, 2024. This formal publication marks the completion of the legislative process required to bring these changes into effect, providing transparency and legal grounding for the amendments.

Prior to the implementation of these changes, Airport Authority Hong Kong undertook a comprehensive consultation process. This involved discussions with various stakeholders who are directly affected by the operations of the airport. The goal was to gather input and address any concerns from those who operate and manage the daily functions within these areas.

Additionally, before the amendments were enacted, a thorough security sweep and detailed checks were conducted within the relevant Restricted Area. This precautionary measure was to ensure that the transition to the new boundaries could be done securely, without compromising the safety and security of the airport operations.
