Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) proudly announces that Malaysia Airlines and Firefly have both successfully secured registration in the International Air Transportation Association’s (IATA) Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) as of July 2024. This achievement marks the tenth consecutive year of IOSA registration for Malaysia Airlines and the first successful audit for Firefly, highlighting MAG’s steadfast commitment to maintaining IATA’s rigorous global safety standards.
Effective immediately, the registration for both airlines will remain valid until 2026.
The thorough audits, conducted in January and February 2024, assessed eight essential operational areas: organization and safety management systems, flight operations, flight dispatch, aircraft engineering and maintenance, cabin operations, ground handling, cargo operations, and operational security.

Dr. Xie Xingquan, IATA’s Regional Vice President for North Asia and Asia-Pacific (ad interim), said, “I congratulate both Malaysia Airlines and Firefly on successfully completing this very rigorous audit, demonstrating their strong commitment to safety. IOSA is making a difference in the industry. Since 2005, the accident rate of IOSA airlines is almost three times better than non-IOSA airlines. And the transition to a risk-based model makes IOSA an even more powerful tool to help airlines and regulators to maintain and improve very high levels of safety performance.”
Firefly, as an initial registrant, underwent the standard audit procedure conducted by an IATA-accredited Audit Organisation (AO). This accomplishment demonstrates the airline’s dedication to meeting the highest international standards for aviation safety and operational excellence.
In contrast, Malaysia Airlines’ renewal registration was achieved through a comprehensive Risk-Based IOSA (RBI) audit carried out by IATA Auditors. The RBI audit tailors its focus to potential safety risks unique to each airline, moving beyond a one-size-fits-all approach. This audit provided an in-depth evaluation of Malaysia Airlines’ safety systems and programs, engaging employees at all levels to assess how safety policies and procedures are understood and implemented throughout the organization, from frontline staff to accountable managers.
Malaysia Airlines first underwent the IOSA Audit in 2005 and has since maintained its active registration, a requirement for its membership in IATA and the oneworld alliance.
The IOSA program is a globally recognized evaluation system designed to assess an airline’s operational management and control systems. For two decades, IOSA has set the industry benchmark for safety auditing, contributing to improved safety performance and offering extensive cost-saving measures for participating airlines.
