London Luton Airport’s New Responsible Business for sustainability goals and commitments for the next three years

London Luton Airport (LLA) has released its updatedc(RBS), outlining its forthcoming sustainability goals and commitments for the next three years.

The revised RBS highlights four main areas: People, Community, Infrastructure, and Partnerships. Key efforts will involve further reducing carbon emissions across LLA’s fleet and ground operations, implementing self-generated electricity solutions, and introducing a community-focused educational initiative.

LLA’s evolving RBS objectives underline the airport’s ambition to be a champion of sustainable aviation and demonstrate the important role we play in the region. Our RBS is based on the principles of collaboration, transparency and innovation, creating a mindset that ensures sustainability is rooted in our operations and culture and ensuring that we continue to operate ethically and grow responsibly. We have achieved several important milestones since launching our first RBS in 2020, and it’s vitally important that we continue to build upon this momentum across all aspects of our operation. ”

Today, London Luton Airport (LLA) also released its 2023 Sustainability Performance Report, detailing progress over the past five years and providing updates on its environmental and social sustainability impact in 2023.

Key highlights include:

  • The largest operation of quieter, more fuel-efficient next-generation aircraft among all major European airports during summer 2023, resulting in emissions reductions of up to 20% per flight compared to previous generation aircraft.
  • Introduction of the new all-electric Express rail service and Luton DART, a fully automated and electrically powered shuttle, enhancing speed, frequency, and sustainability of services to and from LLA.
  • Leading the industry with 53% of supply chain expenditure (£70m) directed towards local businesses within a 25-mile radius of the airport.
  • Receipt of the Green World Environment Award for Environmental Best Practice, recognizing an innovative partnership that boosted recycling rates from 49% to 74%.
  • Achievement of Level 4 ‘Transformation’ in the ACI Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) scheme, making LLA only the third major UK airport to reach this milestone for efforts in emission reduction.
  • Recognition as the top global major infrastructure asset for sustainability governance and disclosure in the prestigious Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB) assessment, marking the second consecutive year.
  • Direct contribution of approximately £0.5m to community investment, benefiting over 15,000 individuals through initiatives such as the newly launched ‘Greener Future Fund’. This fund focuses on education and innovative environmental projects.
  • Implementation of transformative customer service initiatives like ‘The LLA Way’ and ‘Licence to Serve’, providing over 2,000 LLA staff and third parties with skills aimed at delivering exceptional end-to-end guest experiences.
