Qatar Museums and the Municipality of Venice have announced the signing of a Protocol of Cooperation to strengthen their existing relationships and enhance collaboration in cultural and socio-economic fields.
This agreement coincides with Qatar Airways’ announcement to resume direct flights between Doha and Venice on June 12. Additionally, Venice celebrates the opening of the Art for Tomorrow conference, presented by The Democracy & Culture Foundation with Qatar Museums as a founding partner.
Recognizing their shared interests, Qatar Museums and Venice will engage in activities that add value to their cultural heritage, improve knowledge conditions, and encourage business investment, especially in art, preservation, sport, and entertainment. Potential activities include developing exhibitions and seminars on the historical links between Italian and Islamic art and architecture; participating in international festivals and exhibitions; scholarly collaborations such as producing art publications and co-organizing research visits; promoting connections between sporting organizations; exhibiting collections and organizing thematic seminars; and cooperating in the protection and regeneration of cultural heritage, including exchanging information and implementing structural interventions to restore symbolic parts of Venice.
Venice, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, has played a crucial role in world culture for centuries. Since 1895, it has hosted the Venice Biennale, attracting artists and nations worldwide to exhibit together, making it the most significant event on the art world calendar and bringing substantial economic growth through cultural tourism.
This partnership builds on the strong relationship between Qatar Museums and Venice, forged through successful collaborations over the past two years. Qatar Museums is currently organizing the exhibition Your Ghosts Are Mine, Expanded Cinemas, Amplified Voices at ACP-Palazzo Franchetti, on view throughout the 2024 Art Biennale and Venice International Film Festival. Qatar Museums also sponsored the Kengo Kuma: Onomatopoeia Architecture exhibition at ACP-Palazzo Franchetti during the 2023 Architecture Biennale. Artworks on loan from Qatar Museums are featured in the 2024 Venice Art Biennale’s main exhibition, Foreigners Everywhere, and the Worlds of Marco Polo exhibition at the Doge’s Palace, including objects from the Museums of Islamic Art. Additionally, the latest edition of the Art for Tomorrow conference on global cultural issues is held in Venice in June 2024, with Qatar Museums as a founding supporter.
The Protocol of Cooperation will be in effect for five years, until the end of 2029, with the possibility of extension by mutual agreement.
