The revamped American Airlines Cadet Academy offers a streamlined pathway to a career as a commercial airline pilot. Simplifying the transition from flight school to the cockpit, the program enhances accessibility to pilot careers at American Airlines. Central to its mission is the goal of attracting a diverse array of qualified candidates through expanded partnerships with flight schools and industry alliances.

Key features of the Cadet Academy include:

  • Centralized Approach: Instead of navigating multiple flight schools and interviews, aspiring pilots benefit from a consolidated process under the Cadet Academy.
  • Quality Education: American Airlines has collaborated with five top-tier flight schools, ensuring cadets receive robust training essential for their careers.
  • Simplified Interview Process: Cadet Academy participants undergo a streamlined interview, eliminating the need for multiple interviews with various airlines during their training.
  • Guaranteed Career Progression: Graduates are assured placement with one of American’s regional carriers upon successful program completion. Flow-through agreements recently established with each carrier enable direct transition to American’s mainline operation based on seniority accrual.
  • Clear Career Trajectory: This structured approach removes the uncertainty typically associated with post-flight school job applications, allowing aspiring pilots to focus wholly on skill enhancement and training.

The American Airlines Cadet Academy thus represents a definitive advancement in pilot recruitment, offering a straightforward path to joining the prestigious ranks of American Airlines pilots.

The American Airlines Cadet Academy has expanded its network of partner flight schools since its 2018 launch. Today, the program collaborates with five distinguished institutions to offer cadets a diverse array of training options tailored to support American Airlines’ mainline and wholly owned operations:

  • Infinity Flight Group: Recently welcomed as the first East Coast partner, Infinity Flight Group is the largest flight school in the Northeast. Known for its strong commitment to safety and professionalism, it provides comprehensive training at locations in Trenton, New Jersey, and soon in St. Lucie County, Florida.
  • CAE: A global leader in aviation training based in Mesa, Arizona, offering best-in-class instruction that meets rigorous global regulatory standards.
  • Coast Flight Training: Renowned for its quality and large training fleet, Coast Flight Training operates out of San Diego, California, and Dallas and San Marcos, Texas.
  • Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals (OBAP) Luke Weathers Flight Academy: Located in Olive Branch, Mississippi, OBAP’s academy provides essential training and mentorship, particularly focused on aspiring pilots of color.
  • Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology: Located in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Spartan College is recognized for its innovative training methods preparing pilots for the challenges of modern aviation.

“We understand the challenges aspiring pilots face navigating the traditional path to the flight deck,” said Heather Garboden, Senior Vice President of American Eagle and Cargo. “The enhancements we’ve made to the American Airlines Cadet Academy offer compelling, transparent solutions that put future pilots in the pilot’s seat from day one.”

Opening the flight deck to aspiring pilots from diverse backgrounds is a cornerstone of American Airlines’ commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, a principle reflected in the Cadet Academy. Currently, the program boasts approximately 800 cadets representing various backgrounds and nearly every state across the US, a result of targeted recruitment efforts at industry conferences, local high schools, and community events.

American Airlines is also dedicated to removing financial barriers for aspiring pilots. Through a partnership with the American Airlines Credit Union, the Cadet Academy provides financial assistance options to accepted candidates.

The impact of the American Airlines Cadet Academy is underscored by success stories like that of Anneliese Pecunia. Having completed her initial flight training at Coast Flight Training in Dallas, Anneliese now serves as a certified flight instructor, gaining valuable flight hours in the process. “The only way a 20-year-old girl could be working full time now as an instructor and already have nearly 700 hours logged is thanks to the incredible commitment of American Airlines and its dream-enabling Cadet Academy,” she says.
