The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the U.S. Department of Transportation has announced over $123 million for projects enhancing airfield safety and other improvements at 235 airports across 35 states and the District of Columbia.
“The Biden-Harris Administration continues to make our aviation system safer, more accessible, and more resilient through initiatives like the Airport Improvement Program,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. “The grants we’re announcing today will help modernize hundreds of airports across the country and better meet the current and future demands of the flying public.”
This second phase of the Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grants supports a range of projects, including the construction of new and upgraded airport facilities, repairs to runways and taxiways, maintenance of airfield essentials like lighting and signage, and acquisition of necessary equipment for airport operations and upkeep.
“This $123 million investment helps airports across the Nation sustain and improve critical infrastructure to advance the safest, most efficient airport system in the world,” said FAA Associate Administrator for Airports Shannetta R. Griffin, P.E.
Here are some examples of airports receiving grants:
- Buckeye Municipal Airport in Arizona will receive $1.9 million to reconstruct Taxiway J pavement, enhancing safety.
- John Wayne Airport – Orange County in California is granted $3.8 million for purchasing new escalators in Terminals A and B.
- Kit Carson County Airport in Colorado has been allocated $3.5 million for the reconstruction of Taxiway A pavement to improve safety.
- Miami International Airport in Florida will receive $6.8 million to complete the rehabilitation of the existing apron, reducing foreign object debris and enhancing safety.
- Eastern Iowa Airport in Iowa is granted $4.6 million for replacing airport lighting vault equipment and initiating the reconstruction of Taxiway D.
- Topeka Regional Airport in Kansas will use $2.2 million for the reconstruction of Taxiway A pavement to improve safety.
- Cape Girardeau Regional Airport in Missouri has been allocated $2.4 million for reconstructing lighting and pavement on Taxiway D to enhance safety.
- Waynesville-St. Robert Regional Airport/Forney Field in Missouri will receive $1.3 million for constructing a new terminal building, increasing passenger capacity.
- Springfield-Branson National Airport in Missouri is granted $3.5 million for terminal building construction reimbursement.
- Billings Logan International Airport in Montana has been allocated $2 million for reconstructing Taxiway J lighting and constructing a new cargo apron.
- Reno-Tahoe International Airport in Nevada will receive $417,958 for reconstructing pavement on several taxilanes to enhance safety.
Annually, the Airport Improvement Program secures approximately $3.3 billion in funding.
