WestJet has responded to the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA) notice of strike action that began today, June 28, 2024, at 7:30 pm ET.

“The government has officially stepped in to provide binding arbitration to reach a resolution. The union’s decision to strike now only serves to cause damage, disrupt the travel plans of thousands of Canadians over the July long weekend, and inflict significant costs on our business,” stated Diederik Pen, President of WestJet Airlines and Group Chief Operating Officer. “Since arbitration has been ordered, the strike holds no influence over the outcome, making it a purely retaliatory move by a disappointed union. We are extremely outraged by these actions and will hold AMFA fully accountable for the unnecessary stress and costs incurred.”

WestJet is actively and aggressively exploring all options to minimize disruption, including seeking immediate intervention from the Minister of Labour and the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB). Severe travel disruptions are expected if the strike is not called off immediately, as the network takedown can no longer proceed in the orderly manner originally planned by WestJet.

Travelers are advised to check their flight status before heading to the airport. For more information regarding flight status, travel changes, and more, please visit WestJet’s Guest Updates page.
