Safety and operational excellence form the bedrock of aviation, underscored by the informative panels, presentations, and workshops at the ALTA Aviation Safety, Flight Ops & Training Summit in Lima. This event gathered industry leaders and experts to discuss aviation security, operations, and training.
Commercial aviation reached zero fatalities in the Americas in 2023, “a notable achievement for an aviation sector that represents more than 35% of global air traffic,” explained Fabio Rabbani, ICAO South America Regional Director.
Rabbani emphasized that the latest forecasts indicate that the number of passengers could increase from the current 4.6 billion passengers to 12.4 billion in 2050, that is, almost tripling in the next 25 years. Therefore, “it is crucial that services remain fully available, with updated regulatory frameworks, with an infrastructure capable of supporting the increase in movements, with trained personnel and, above all, with safe operations.”
Fostering a safety culture in aviation is paramount. This culture, shaped by individuals across the ecosystem, embodies a shared commitment to rigorous safety practices and ongoing vigilance. While technology plays a crucial role in security management, offering advanced monitoring, data analysis, and emergency response capabilities, experts emphasized it cannot replace human judgment, experience, and accountability. They underscored that operational excellence forms the foundation of effective security measures. While celebrating achievements, the focus remains on continuous efforts to address three critical challenges: climate change, infrastructure needed for safe and efficient sector growth, and fostering collaborative partnerships.
“We must continue to support our professionals to ensure that aviation is a continued success. Our goal is to protect lives and promote a safe and sustainable global system, connecting the world for the benefit of all nations and people. Safety management It is not an isolated activity of each organization, but part of an integrated system, like a well-tuned engine,” Rabbani explained.
Technology serves as a crucial aid, augmenting human capabilities and minimizing the likelihood of errors. However, genuine safety in aviation is attained through universal adherence to rigorous procedures, effective communication, and a proactive approach to error prevention. Thus, the synergy between a safety culture fostered by individuals and the judicious application of technology significantly bolsters aviation safety.
Donald Castillo, General Director of the DGAC of Peru, emphasized that, when talking about aviation, the first word that should be used is safety. “I think we are all convinced of that concept, and that is what we are looking for. We are talking about connectivity, people transportation, so when you think about aviation, you have to think about safety, because this is the safest means of transportation of the world”.
Jose Ricardo Botelho, CEO and Executive Director of ALTA highlights that “the challenge going forward consists of maintaining standards and raising them even further while introducing new technologies, new procedures, incorporating new equipment that will allow this essential sector to grow at the pace that population demands it.”’
