Alstom, renowned for its expertise in smart and sustainable transportation, has agreed to provide an additional twelve trams to VBZ. Previously in 2017, VBZ had secured 70 vehicles from Alstom, with the option to purchase up to 70 more. To date, VBZ has utilized this option to acquire 52 vehicles, bringing their total order to 122 trams.

Currently, Zurich operates over 60 Alstom Flexity trams. These trams are enhanced with the advanced ODAS (Obstacle Detection Assistance System), a smart technology that aids drivers by identifying obstacles on the tram path. This system contributes to the high operational reliability of the trams in service.

VBZ is meeting a need with the additional vehicles: “We are replacing the older generation of Tram 2000 vehicles with the Flexity tram and are driving forward modernisation. Some of the vehicles will also be used to expand services in order to make public transport in Zurich even more attractive,” says Marco Lüthi, Director of VBZ. Alstom Switzerland is also delighted: “The order shows that VBZ is very satisfied with our tram. The cooperation is excellent and the 60 Flexity trams deployed enrich the cityscape of Zurich,” emphasises Marie Icardo, Managing Director of Alstom Switzerland.

The initial set of 70 trams is scheduled for delivery by the end of 2024, with the additional trams expected by Spring 2028.

Alstom boasts a prestigious history of over three decades in the tram and light rail industry, with more than 8,000 vehicles either ordered or actively serving in 140 cities worldwide. The company offers an extensive array of products including trams, light rail vehicles, streetcars, and tram-trains, tailored for both existing and new routes, and adaptable to urban and suburban settings. Alstom continues to lead with innovative safety technologies like obstacle detection, overspeed monitoring, collision prevention, and automatic braking systems, along with versatile solutions for catenary-free operations. Flexity™ and ODAS™ are registered trademarks of Alstom.
