Updated August 27th: This article on the best puffer jackets was updated with new product picks and puffer jacket trends for fall and winter 2024. Our editors are currently testing puffer coats from brands like Free People and Patagonia for consideration in this expert-approved guide.

Fall is almost here, which means the wrath of Jack Frost is quickly approaching. Before you start overhauling your cold weather wardrobe with new chunky knits, cozy cashmere jumpers, and sweater dresses, consider building your arsenal of warm layers from the outside in. The best puffer jackets will likely be one of your biggest style investments of the season, so shopping for one early this fall will pay off as the most in-demand silhouettes are still in stock. Plus, top puffer jackets are your best weapon for braving frigid temperatures, which, these days, could blow in at any moment.

The best puffer jackets for women can work for every occasion — from ultra-warm long puffer coats for snow days to subdued bomber silhouettes for streamlined layering. Whether you’re trekking through snow or simply want to keep warm during your morning commute, investing in an insulated, durable puffer jacket is key to protecting you (and your outfits!) from snow, slush, rain, wind, and chilly temperatures. With so many options, you can rest assured that there’s a perfect puffer — or two — to upgrade your outerwear arsenal for cold weather ahead.

Need some inspiration before you shop? The fall and winter 2024 runways were brimming with fresh and fashionable styles. This season, puffer jacket trends are leaning into extreme silhouettes, from ankle-skimming insulation at Jil Sander and Vetements to flattering cropped puffer jackets and vests with high, heat-trapping collars at Schiaparelli and Miu Miu. Puffer jackets are evolving as style statements (rather than ugly layers over your outfit), whether in organic denim fabrications at Chanel or supple quilted leather at MSGM.

Editor’s Choice: Top 3 Puffer Jackets of 2024

As New Yorkers, WWD Shop editors regularly road test puffer jackets. We faced sharp windchills and snowy weather last winter, so we tested and assessed dozens of puffer jacket styles, from new releases to bestsellers and our own personal favorites. In the process, we were able to narrow down the most insulating options that still deliver on style. We’ve conducted a second round of testing with new puffer jackets to see how our previous picks compare. Any options that fell short on style appeal or essential comfort were knocked off our top list.

Since puffer jackets come in a wide assortment of shapes, lengths, sizes, and materials, three WWD Shop editors are spotlighting our favorite puffer jackets that appeal to different preferences. We rated each of our favorite puffer jackets based on a checklist of essential criteria like insulation and reliable warmth, elevated style, and whether the jackets feel overly heavy or bulky. Below, our winner’s circle.

  • Canada Goose Grandview Cropped Jacket: We came for this jacket’s aesthetic and stayed for its impressive cold weather protection. It features trends we saw all over recent runways, like a high collar and cropped hem, plus it’s done in a simple and versatile design made of recycled material and cozy goose down insulation. We recommend this one for the daily schlep through the snow or bone-chilling breeze — this high-tech topper adds an extra layer of style appeal.
  • Aritzia The Super Puff Jacket: We can attest that this cult-favorite Aritzia puffer jacket is worth the hype. Its 700+ goose down insulation, durable nylon shell, storm cuffs, and fleece-lined pockets make it an all-in-one options for those who prefer a puffer that also delivers stylish flair. Plus, it comes in a range of inclusive sizing, finishes, and colorway options.
  • Rudsak Mao M Recycled Stormshell Maxi Down Puffer: Aptly named, this extra long Rudsak puffer is the ultimate shell to shield against the cold. Its mid-calf hem covers nearly the entire body in a mix of recycled leather and polyester, with cozy-warm 800+ fill duck down. We love that its crisp colorways add polish for bundled-up days and that its -22 degree temperature rating will never leave you in the cold.

Editor testing review notes: “I finally get the hype around this puffer — it’s been my secret weapon all season long. I’ve worn it through rain and snow, and even on New Year’s Eve atop a little black dress, and it always keeps me so warm no matter the conditions. Like magic, I feel zero windchill when I wear this puffer, even when I’m walking through one of New York City’s wind tunnels. I also have a bad habit of losing the mates to my mittens, so I especially appreciate the thumb hole storm cuff layer and fleece-lined pockets that provide a cozy shelter for my paws. Plus, I love that it comes in varying lengths, as my stature is a mere five foot one, and winter coats tend to swallow me up. The ‘Shorty’ style fits perfectly below my hips and doesn’t feel too bulky or restrictive. Its glossy finish makes it just as stylish as it is warm, and I can already tell it’s going to last me for many winters to come.” — Commerce Writer and Producer, Olivia Cigliano

Nike Sportswear Swoosh Puffer Primeloft Jacket

Sizes: XS-XXL
Colorways: White, black, olive
Insulation: Nike Therma-fit and Primaloft and Thermoplume technology
Fabric: Recycled polyester
Cold Weather Features: Oversized hood, zip pockets

The Nike Sportswear Swoosh Puffer Primeloft Jacket is one of the best puffer jackets for cold weather activities and winter sports. Nike’s Therma-Fit technology helps to regulate your body temperature in the cold, while Thermoplume down alternative insulation traps your natural heat close to your body. This puffer coat features an oversized fit and extra large hood, plus zip side pockets to warm up your hands in the cold.

What testers say: “I was very surprised by how warm this puffer is, considering it is pretty lightweight. It seems to lock in your body temperature well and would be great in cold weather. I am usually not a fan of puffy jackets, but this one is a more cropped fit hitting right at my waistline for a more flattering look. The little details are what make this a great coat — the pockets have zippers which is huge for me because I am always nervous about losing things. Instead of the flap that covers the zipper having multiple buttons, it only has one at the top and bottom (I hate zipping up a jacket and then having three to five buttons to deal with). And the hood is pretty big with adjusters. Overall I really like the feel of this coat and think it will be great for mild to severe winter weather!”

What to Look for When Shopping for a Women’s Puffer Jacket

Insulation: When it comes to a warm puffer jacket, insulation and material are the most important things to look for. “Different insulations such as 800-fill power and 700-fill power down, recycled down, and high thermal conductivity fillings (which are excellent at rapid heat absorption and release) are used depending on the intended use case,” says Shimizu. Shai Peyser, President of The Very Warm, says, “the best insulation for a puffer coat remains to be goose down. However, with the current climate, both literally and figuratively, there are new options that are cruelty-free and make a difference by repurposing plastics that might otherwise end up in landfills.” Alternative downs are more than sufficient for the non-arctic environments, which luckily includes most of the globe. For traditional goose-down fills, many brands will indicate the insulation power level of the coat, like 650-fill power. The higher the number, the more warmth power the fill has. For a down alternative, look to synthetics, polyester, or eco-friendly recycled plastic materials. Some of these are nearly as warm as goose down, depending on the blend.

Cold weather features: Puffer jackets can vary with additional weather-proof features. Besides insulation, Peyser says, “the other secret to guaranteed warmth is avoiding openings that allow the cold to get in. Always look for a coat with a good seal at the hem, sleeves, and, if applicable, a hood. These are all crucial to getting that seal around your body, trapping the warm air inside, and providing optimal warmth,” Peyser continues. Pay attention to coats that deliver on wind-proof materials, as well as extra features like fleece-lined pockets, bonus lining, and removable elements that you can alter based on the weather.

Material: If you’re planning to wear your puffer jacket in snow, rain, or intense winter conditions, you’ll want to ensure the fabric is water-repellent, waterproof, or, at the very least, resistant. Typical materials include nylon, polyamide, and recycled polyester. In addition, be sure to look for wind-resistant fabrics if you’re looking for something heavy-duty.

Length: There are four major lengths to choose from in puffer jackets: cropped, classic/short, mid-thigh, and long. A longline puffer jacket is a way to go if you prefer optimal coverage and warmth. However, if you want something more casual or lightweight, a short or cropped puffer jacket will suit you best. “Long and short puffers are a practical investment that can last you years, but short puffers tend to be more of a canvas for brands to play with each year, be it colors, prints, or other interesting styling options,” Peyser explains.

Bulkiness: Puffer jackets range in levels of bulkiness and weight. If you prefer something you can layer over thick winter sweaters, try wearing a puffer jacket that is slightly oversized or loose. And if you get hot easily, a lightweight puffer jacket is probably the wiser decision.

The Different Types of Puffer Jackets

  • Cropped puffer jackets: Cropped puffer jackets are a great option for mixing warm function and style. They often sit just below the waistline, making them the perfect coat to pair with high-waisted jeans or comfortable pants. Be sure to double-check that your cropped puffer includes side pockets to keep your hands warm, as some versions omit them for lack of space. Cropped puffer jackets are best for fall or mild winters, since they fail to insulate the lower torso and legs in harsh weather.
  • Knee-length puffer jackets: Puffer jackets that extend to the knee are some of the warmest coats you can buy for winter. They maximize insulation on the majority of your body, often with down or other fill alternatives, and include plenty of side and interior pockets for safe storage. This type of puffer jacket is best for outdoor activities in snow or slush, because it protects your outfit from getting wet and holds in all your body heat.
  • Longline puffer jackets: According to Peyser, “The long puffer will always be a good investment for the utility alone. Brands tend to take fewer risks with long puffers because they’re already a significant investment for most. A simple and warm long puffer will always be in style.”
  • Fleece-lined puffer jackets: Fleece-lined puffer jackets are ideal for those who are extra sensitive to the cold. You can also find fleece lining in almost any puffer jacket style, such as knee-length or cropped puffer jackets. Fleece works as an ideal heat insulator because it’s lightweight and soft to the touch, which gives a puffer jacket an extra-cozy feel.
  • Leather puffer jackets: Leather puffer jackets are a savvy way to add edge to your outwear style. Like typical leather jackets, they’re available in both genuine leather and vegan leather options. They contain similar padding and insulation like other puffers and front a thick leather shell. While leather isn’t snow or waterproof, it is water-resistant, heavy, and retains heat well. It’s best for mild outdoor activities, such as running errands or going out to dinner.

Voluminous puffer jackets can be tricky to style, especially when you’re already focused on braving extra cold temps. Your first layers will naturally prioritize warmth, which is where insulating bodysuits and cozy knee-high socks come in handy, but elements that aren’t hidden, like bottoms and accessories, allow more room to play. Upon styling your puffer jacket, you’ll first want to consider its silhouette and length. Then, you can build from its color, finish, and adornments to create an elevated look. Below, we’ve styled our top three Editor’s Choice puffer jackets to lend inspiration — because, let’s face it, when it’s cold outside, it’s hard to blend fashion and function.

Canada Goose Grandview Cropped Jacket

The Canada Goose Grandview Cropped Jacket is cropped and minimal; lean into its contemporary vibe with barrel-leg baggy jeans to balance proportions. Then, go with all-black accessories to dress the look up for day or night, like knee-high kitten heel boots, futuristic sunglasses, and a chic everyday bag to hold small essentials.

Shown with: Abercrombie Curve Love Mid Rise Barrel Jeans ($90), Le Specs Don’t Cha Sunglasses ($65), Everlane The Knee-High Banana Heel Boots ($350), Cos Fold Micro Tote ($150)

Aritzia The Super Puff Jacket

Since Aritzia’s Super Puff Jacket has a shiny, vinyl-like finish, consider pairing it with leather pants that offer a similar sheen (and added warmth). Ugg’s Dipper Boots are an easy and on-trend addition, considering their ability to handle slush and snow with a thick platform midsole that stacks up in style points. For the bag, reach for a crossbody bag with a long enough strap for you to wear it over the jacket without feeling squeezed.

Shown with: Agolde Recycled Leather Pants ($130), Acne Studios Valley Scarf ($340), Ugg Classic Mini Dipper Boots ($160), Coach Trail Crossbody 12 With Pillow Quilting ($275),

Rudsak Mao Stormshell Maxi Down Puffer

When you’re working with an extra long puffer jacket, you only need to consider the accessories, since the outerwear serves as a centerpiece. Slip into a white turtleneck that’ll barely peek over the collar and black thermal leggings as a base layer. You can add any winter boot style to this look; on extra-cold days, stylish knee-high boots from Vionic add extra warmth in the leg department. Finally, add a graphic, textural feel to the ‘fit with Coachtopia’s Small Ergo Bag.

Shown with: Naked Wardrobe Smooth as Butter Mock Neck Top ($62), Skims Stretch Cotton Rib Leggings ($56), Vionic Inessa Boots ($83), Coach Ergo Bag ($350)

How Do You Wash a Puffer Jacket?

Rather than throwing your puffer jacket into the washing machine without any research, follow these simple steps to wash and dry it properly. Make sure to pay attention the brand’s wash instruction before placing your purchase, as some styles and fabrics may be machine-washable or require dry cleaning.

  • Prepare: First, empty all the pockets, seal all the velcro closures, and ensure that your down jacket is completely zipped all the way up. If your coat has any faux-fur trims, make sure those are removed as well.
  • Machine wash and dry: If the label on your puffer says you can machine wash it, find a detergent that is specifically designed for down feathers to ensure they’re kept fluffy. Then, set your washing machine to a gentle cycle on low heat. After the wash cycle, place the jacket into a machine dryer set on low heat. Avoid drying other clothes with your jacket, as drying it with other materials like denim could damage its shell.
  • Hand wash and dry: If your coat’s label indicates that it can’t be machine washed, hand washing it will work just fine. Fill up your sink or bathtub with warm water, adding down-specific detergent into the water. Allow your down jacket to soak for up to an hour, and then rinse and ring out the water. Then, place your jacket on a coat hanger and hang it up in a place that’s dry and cool (humid environments can cause your puffer jacket to smell).
