The flight LX161, originating from Tokyo and bound for Zurich, had to make an unexpected landing in Astana, Kazakhstan due to a medical emergency involving one of its passengers, who was subsequently cared for by local medical staff.

The landing itself went smoothly; however, due to a closed taxiway at Astana airport, the aircraft had to be maneuvered 180 degrees on the runway, during which the nose wheel became lodged in the grass and immobilized. The Boeing 777 was subsequently towed back to the runway and is currently under inspection by technical experts to determine when it will be fit for flight again.

Efforts are now underway to arrange onward travel for the 319 passengers to Zurich or other final destinations. Due to limited rebooking options in Astana, there is consideration of dispatching a replacement aircraft with a new crew from Zurich to facilitate this.
