Saudi Arabia Railways Reports 17% Increase in Passenger Numbers and Launches New Initiatives in 2024

In the first half of 2024, Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) reported notable operational achievements that greatly benefit travelers and the country’s logistics sector. Surge in Passenger Numbers and Trips

SAR experienced a remarkable 17% increase in passenger numbers during the first half of 2024, with over 5.1 million passengers utilizing its trains. This growth is complemented by a 5% rise in the number of trips across its network, totaling 17,200 trips. This includes the Eastern Train, Northern Train, and the Haramain High-Speed Train networks. Such an increase not only highlights the reliability and efficiency of SAR services but also enhances the travel experience for passengers.

Boost in Freight Transport

The volume of minerals and goods transported through SAR’s network exceeded 13.26 million tons, reflecting a 9% increase compared to the same period in 2023. By reducing over one million vehicle trips on the highways, SAR significantly enhances road safety, preserves infrastructure, and lowers carbon emissions, contributing to national environmental objectives.

Successful Hajj Operations

CEO Dr. Bashar bin Khalid Al Malik attributed the successful Hajj operations to the unwavering support of Saudi leadership and SAR’s continuous efforts to improve passenger services. These efforts align with the goals of the National Strategy for Transport and Logistics Services and Vision 2030, ensuring a smooth and efficient travel experience for pilgrims.

Strategic Agreements and Future Developments

In the first six months of 2024, SAR signed several strategic agreements and Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with global firms to enhance railway transportation services. A key highlight is the agreement to launch the first luxury train service in the Middle East and North Africa, scheduled for Q4 2025. This service is expected to provide a unique and opulent travel experience, attracting tourists and luxury travelers to the region.

Modernization and Expansion Initiatives

To further improve the travel experience, SAR signed a contract to purchase 10 modern trains for the Eastern Railway Network. This initiative aims to enhance comfort, efficiency, and service quality, thereby reaching national targets in the field. Additionally, SAR sealed two MoUs with the Saudi Authority for Industrial Cities and Technology Zones (Modon). These agreements will link the logistics zone in the second industrial city in Dammam to the railway network, facilitating access to various ports and enabling the industrial sector to connect to local, regional, and global markets.
