The German Foreign Office has issued a warning to its citizens, advising them to refrain from traveling to Bangladesh.

“There is a curfew in place following violent clashes, and internet and mobile services are blocked,” the ministry said in an X post Sunday.

The office expects the situation in the South Asian nation to get worse. “More than 100 people have already died during the demonstrations and protests,” the report said.

German citizens currently in Bangladesh are encouraged to enroll in the crisis preparedness registry.

How is the current political landscape in Bangladesh?

The advisory was issued shortly after a new curfew was implemented on Friday. Bangladesh has been experiencing widespread protests concerning a reservation system, which was abolished in 2018 after massive student demonstrations.

The former quota system allocated over half of the civil service positions to specific groups.

A court reinstated the reservation system, sparking mass protests in early July, as many young people felt disadvantaged by it.

On Sunday, the Supreme Court scaled back the reintroduction plan, but student leaders remain dissatisfied with the amendments.

Due to police being unable to control the riots, armed forces have been deployed nationwide, and internet access has been restricted since Thursday.

Additionally, the US State Department warned Americans on Saturday against traveling to Bangladesh and announced plans to evacuate some diplomats and their families from the country.
