Italy’s significant role in the global aerospace and defence sectors was highlighted at the Farnborough Air Show, featuring advanced technologies and strategic international collaborations.

The Farnborough Air Show concluded with a strong Italian presence, underscoring Italy’s pivotal role in the global aerospace and defence sectors. Major Italian companies, including Leonardo, the largest Italian aerospace and defence company, showcased cutting-edge technologies and solutions. The event was marked by the participation of high-ranking officials, including Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto, alongside army and air force representatives.

Italian Innovations on Display

Leonardo captured significant attention with its advanced defence and aerospace technologies. From helicopters to sophisticated defence systems, Leonardo’s exhibit highlighted its dedication to technological excellence and global security. One of the most notable highlights was the unveiling of the new version of the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP). This sixth-generation fighter aircraft, a collaborative effort between Italy, the United Kingdom, and Japan, is set to be a cornerstone of future aviation systems. The program aims to establish a solid defence strategy, reflecting the participating countries’ commitment to enhancing global security.

The Italian pavilion at Farnborough was a testament to the nation’s leading role in the aerospace sector. The launch of a capacity enhancement program for the M-346 training aircraft was also announced during the show. This program includes improvements in avionics, navigation and identification capabilities, mission equipment, ground training, and the implementation of AI-based digital solutions.

Strengthening Defence Diplomacy

Defence diplomacy was a key theme at the show. Crucial moments included a trilateral meeting between Minister Crosetto, his Japanese counterpart Minoru Kihara, and UK Secretary of State for Defence John Healey at the Palace of White Hall. A subsequent bilateral meeting between Crosetto and Kihara at the Italian embassy focused on discussing the GCAP and the importance of international cooperation in strengthening defence systems.

Minister Crosetto highlighted the significance of the GCAP program, stating, “Cordial and useful meeting with my Japanese colleague Kihara Minoru. Among the topics discussed was industrial collaboration, particularly the GCAP program, for which it is essential to meet deadlines due to its significant technological and scientific impact. Additionally, we emphasised intensifying training activities to ensure interoperability between the Italian and Japanese Armed Forces. We also reiterated the importance of the Indo-Pacific area for global and Italian commercial traffic.”

Conclusion

The Farnborough Air Show showcased Italy’s significant contributions to the global aerospace and defence sectors. The strong Italian presence, led by Leonardo’s innovative technologies, highlighted the country’s commitment to technological excellence and global security. The discussions and collaborations at the event underscored the importance of international cooperation in strengthening defence systems, reflecting Italy’s proactive stance in global defence partnerships.
