The 2024 Paris Olympics has unraveled a runway of head-turning fashion moments, from star-studded Opening Ceremony arrivals to A-listers lounging in the bleachers. Ariana Grande, for one, has earned gold for her sweet, 1960s-chic outfits that nod to starlets of the past. Her latest summer staple? Loewe’s space-age round sunglasses.
On the second day of the Olympic Games, Grande sat in the stands for the Artistic Gymnastics Women’s Qualification with her Wicked co-star Cynthia Erivo, wearing a Loro Piana east-west straw bag and custom white belted shift dress by Thom Browne, the designer also responsible for both actress’s very in-character Opening Ceremony ensembles. She matched her simple look with striking sunglasses from Loewe that are reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn’s costuming in “How to Steal a Million” — adding yet another Swinging Sixties reference to her portfolio of outfits inspired by the decade.
In fact, this isn’t the first time the pop star has directly referenced Hepburn’s iconic style. Take Grande’s Vera Wang wedding dress in 2021, for instance, which was sculpted in satin with an Empire waist, and pulled loose inspiration from Hepburn’s bridal gown in “Funny Face.” And, while Grande’s current styling leans into more elegant, ladylike silhouettes of the ’60s akin to Jackie Kennedy, the singer previously dedicated her entire “Positions” album musical era to “youthquake” fashion influences — complete with flapping Twiggy eyelashes, mod floral accessories, and similar boldly shaped sunnies. Not to mention, her cosmetics line R.e.m. beauty is entirely centered around mod-’60s glamor.
It’s no denying that the “cultural decade” has been Grande’s main muse, and it’s carried on through her latest appearances, whether she’s promoting her “Eternal Sunshine” album or her role as Glinda in “Wicked.” Lately, her easy-to-emulate wardrobe’s been grounded in mod-inspired shift shapes and flattering mini skirts, knee-high Go-go boots and white pumps that complement her short hems, and even T-strap Mary Jane Shoes as seen in the “Yes, and?” music video).
