Virgin Australia has announced that it will terminate its daily Cairns to Tokyo Haneda flights on 24 February 2025, a surprising decision made just a year after launching this route, its sole Asian service. The airline attributes this move to multiple factors, particularly emphasizing the sluggish recovery of inbound tourism from Japan, which remains about 35% below pre-pandemic levels.
Additionally, from September 2024 to mid-November 2024, Virgin Australia plans to reduce its Tokyo flights to six per week during the off-peak season to “consolidate” its schedule.
Following this adjustment, Virgin Australia will focus exclusively on its short-haul international routes, which currently include services to New Zealand, Fiji, Vanuatu, and Samoa.
