Wizz Air Pledges 11% Sustainable Aviation Fuel By 2030 In Ambitious New Sustainability Drive

Wizz Air wins “Most Sustainable Low-Cost Airline” for the fourth year, thanks to its record-low CO2 intensity and a pledge to use 10% sustainable aviation fuel by 2030.

Wizz Air, renowned for its rapid growth in Europe and its global commitment to environmental sustainability, has been honored as the “Most Sustainable Low-Cost Airline” for the fourth year in a row at the World Finance Sustainability Awards 2024. This recognition highlights the airline’s pivotal role in advancing the decarbonization of the aviation sector.

Wizz Air boasts the lowest carbon emission intensity per passenger kilometer among its peers, and it is dedicated to further reducing its CO2 intensity by 2030. In the financial year 2024, Wizz Air recorded an impressive average CO2 intensity of just 52 grams per passenger kilometer. This achievement is attributed to the company’s fleet renewal strategy and investment in state-of-the-art aircraft. The airline continues to integrate more Airbus A321neo planes into its fleet, achieving an average fleet age of 4.3 years. In April 2024, Wizz Air announced an ambitious new goal to power 10% of its flights with sustainable aviation fuel by 2030. This initiative reinforces Wizz Air’s leadership in sustainability and underscores its commitment to cutting carbon emissions per passenger kilometer by 25% by 2030.

To get to net zero the industry needs to collaborate and bring all the relevant actors in the aviation ecosystem together to ensure the technological development needed is supported and financed. Therefore, governments and policymakers will play a key role in creating the necessary frameworks to provide meaningful incentives to encourage strategic investment in renewable energy and low carbon technologies.
