At the invitation of ICAO, ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East (ACI APAC & MID) joined an ICAO security assistance mission in Bhutan from June 17 to 21, 2024. The Bhutan Civil Aviation Authority (BCAA) hosted this mission, which was part of a larger capacity-building initiative by the ICAO Asia & Pacific Regional Office aimed at enhancing security standards across the Asia-Pacific region.

The mission team included Mr. Remington Low from ICAO APAC and Mr. Gary Leung from ACI APAC & MID.

The mission commenced with a meeting with Mr. Kinley Wangchuk, Director of BCAA. During this meeting, the team outlined the objectives of their visit and provided an overview of the planned activities.

Over the week, the mission team addressed findings from a recent ICAO security audit. They met with Mr. Karma Wang, Director General of Paro International Airport, and the airport security team to understand their daily operational challenges.

The mission team offered various recommendations for improvement and shared ACI’s security tools and materials during the onsite engagement. A detailed written report on the recommendations and follow-up actions from this mission will be provided to BCAA at a later stage.

Capacity building in aviation security is crucial for the aviation industry, particularly in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions. ACI APAC & MID values the invitation from ICAO and is committed to collaborating with various regional stakeholders to provide technical assistance to airports and other relevant entities.
