As the summer travel season ramps up, the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) is gearing up for a busy period at airport checkpoints. With an estimated 20 million travellers expected to pass through Canadian airports this summer, CATSA emphasizes the importance of preparation for a smooth security screening experience.

Nada Semaan, CEO of CATSA, expressed confidence in the organization’s readiness for the anticipated surge in travel. “Ensuring the security of every passenger is our top priority. Our team is fully prepared to handle the increased volume while maintaining the highest security standards and providing excellent passenger service.”
To help travellers prepare effectively, CATSA offers essential packing tips:
- Liquids, Aerosols, and Gels: Pack these items in containers of 100ml or less, and place them in a single, clear, resealable 1L bag. Exceptions apply for children under two years old and for prescription and non-prescription medications.
- Solid Foods: Within Canada, solid foods can be packed in carry-on or checked baggage. For international destinations, any unconsumed food in transit or checked baggage must comply with destination country regulations. Pourable or spreadable food items in carry-ons are subject to the 100ml restriction.
- Medication and Medical Devices: Essential medications in carry-on bags are exempt from liquid restrictions. Pills can be kept in original containers or pill organizers. Travellers with special medical devices such as insulin pumps or pacemakers should inform screening officers for assistance during screening.
- Batteries: Regulations for batteries and power banks vary by size and type. Check CATSA’s website and consult your airline for specific guidelines.
On your travel day:
- Arrive Early: Aim to arrive at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international or US flights, as recommended by airlines.
- Prepare Documents: Keep your boarding pass accessible for screening officers.
- Dress Appropriately: Minimize metal items that could trigger alarms at metal detectors.
- Separate Electronics: Remove laptops from cases and place them in bins for screening. Consider personalizing your laptop for easy identification post-screening.
- 1L Liquids Bag: Remove and place your 1L liquids bag in a bin for inspection.
