South Korean low-cost carrier T’way Air is accelerating its expansion into Europe with the launch of new routes to Rome and Barcelona. As of 7 June, the airline announced that it had secured the necessary approvals to start flights to Frankfurt in October and is in the final stages of preparations to introduce services to Paris, following an agreement between Korean and French aviation authorities.

Starting on 8 August, T’way will begin thrice-weekly flights to Rome, followed by the inauguration of its Barcelona service on 11 September. These routes will be serviced by the airline’s Airbus A330-200, which seats 246 passengers. According to Cirium fleet data, T’way currently operates one A330-200 aircraft (HL8211), a former Korean Air asset.

The upcoming launches in Rome and Barcelona represent T’way’s second and third European destinations, respectively. These new additions follow the airline’s successful debut into the European market in May, when it commenced operations to Zagreb, Croatia.

T’way’s expansion into Europe is part of a broader strategy driven by conditions set by European Union regulators. The approval of the merger between Korean Air and Asiana Airlines came with stipulations to ensure competitive balance on European routes. One of these conditions mandated that another South Korean operator be permitted to enter the European market, paving the way for T’way’s expanded footprint.

In addition to Rome, Barcelona, and Frankfurt, T’way is also eyeing Paris as its next major European destination. The airline is poised to start ticket sales for these routes as soon as the schedules are finalized, promising enhanced connectivity and more travel options for passengers.

“Our goal is to provide more choices for travelers and support increased business and leisure travel between South Korea and Europe,” said a T’way representative. “These new routes will significantly strengthen our European network and provide better access to key destinations.”

As T’way continues to grow its presence in Europe, the airline is positioning itself as a key player in the low-cost long-haul market, offering competitive alternatives on popular routes and stimulating further travel between Asia and Europe.
