Qatar Airways Group and Malaysia Aviation Group have deepened their alliance as oneworld partners by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Qatar Airways Cargo and MASkargo, the cargo subsidiary of Malaysia Aviation Group. This MoU aims to enhance their cargo service offerings and operational synergies. It builds on the expanded codeshare agreement from 2022 between Qatar Airways and Malaysia Airlines, which boosted connectivity for passengers.

Through this new joint cargo business agreement, the airlines will utilize their combined network strengths and fleet capacities to enhance cargo services. MASkargo will benefit from access to the extensive global network of Qatar Airways Cargo, and Qatar Airways Cargo will expand its reach into the growing APAC market, including new destinations and increased capacity at existing locations.

Additionally, both carriers will use Hamad International Airport (DOH) and Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) as key hubs to support their combined networks. This strategy is supported by the growth of Qatar Airways Cargo’s facilities, including a new and expanded Cargo Terminal in Doha.

The partnership aligns with both airlines’ growth strategies. Qatar Airways Cargo, as the launch customer for the Boeing 777-8 freighter, has secured 34 aircraft with options for 16 more. Meanwhile, Malaysian Airlines has added 20 new A330neo aircraft for its passenger services, which will also support cargo transport.

Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, said: “Our new MoU with Malaysia Aviation Group is testament to our deepening relations with Malaysia and the integral APAC market. This strategic cooperation with our oneworld partner will serve to link our freighter and belly-hold networks with our cargo product offering and capacity, allowing us to further cement our relationship and foster the close links between our airlines.”

Group Managing Director of Malaysia Aviation Group, Captain Izham Ismail, said: “Expanding our partnership with Qatar Airways Cargo marks a significant milestone for MASkargo. This collaboration will not only enhance our product offering and operational capabilities but also solidify our position in the global cargo market. By leveraging each other’s strengths, we are poised to deliver unparalleled service to our customers and achieve remarkable growth together.”

Since initiating their codeshare cooperation in 2004, Qatar Airways and Malaysia Airlines have considerably broadened their partnership, now including 62 codeshare destinations across various regions including Malaysia, South East Asia, Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East, Europe, the Americas, and Africa.

In 2022, the airlines also signed a strategic MoU to enhance their passenger airline partnership, offering more flight choices, a broader range of destinations, and increased passenger flexibility.
