Charlize Theron Favors Peekaboo Bra Layering Trends at LGBTQ Awards

Charlize Theron joined the growing list of celebrities embracing the peekaboo bra layering trend with her striking all-black ensemble at the Critics Choice Association’s inaugural Celebration of LGBTQ Cinema & Television in Los Angeles last night.

The actress wore a long tailored black blazer with nothing underneath aside from a glimpse of a black lace bra. Her ensemble also included a black leather mini skirt subtly visible below the blazer’s hem. Theron completed the sophisticated look with black leather heels featuring a thick wrapped ankle strap.

Theron’s outfit reflects a trend that has been gaining traction among celebrities on the red carpet as an expression of empowerment, often pairing the peekaboo bra with more menswear-inspired silhouettes. Gwen Stefani recently showcased this style wearing a long-sleeved flannel shirt buttoned only at the top, revealing a black bra during the first night of CMA Fest. Opting for a more feminine take on the trend, Natalie Portman embraced the look with a black bra peeking out from under her dress during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live back in January.

Even Theron has donned the look in the past. In May 2023, she wore a black mesh ensemble by Christian Dior for the “Fast X” premiere in Rome. The outfit featured a plunging dress over a matching bralette and shorts. The peekaboo bra trend, initially popularized in the ’80s by Madonna’s cone bra, experienced a revival in 2023 at the Cannes Film Festival.

The Critics Choice Association event honored notable contributions to LGBTQ+ cinema and television. Theron presented an award to drag queens Sasha Velour, Priyanka, Jaida Essence Hall, and Latrice Royale — past contestants on “RuPaul’s Drag Race” — for their efforts in confronting misinformation about drag queens through nationwide educational events with their series, “We’re Here.”
