Cathay and Singapore Airlines sign an MoU to boost sustainable aviation fuel use and reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
Cathay and Singapore Airlines (SIA) have entered into a partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on various sustainability efforts. This partnership is particularly focused on promoting the use and development of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) within the Asia-Pacific region, recognizing it as a pivotal step towards decarbonizing aviation. They also aim to enhance sustainability practices across their operations.
The MoU was formalized by Cathay Group’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Ronald Lam, and Singapore Airlines’ CEO, Mr. Goh Choon Phong, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, during the 80th International Air Transport Association (IATA) Annual General Meeting and World Air Transport Summit.
This agreement emphasizes both airlines’ dedication to reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and their commitment to driving sustainable changes within the industry.
The collaboration will primarily focus on advocating for broader utilization of SAF in the Asia-Pacific region. Efforts will include increasing public awareness of SAF’s essential role in reducing aviation carbon footprints, pushing for favorable policies, and fostering the establishment of a unified global framework for accurate emissions reporting and verification. Additionally, the airlines will consider joint SAF procurement strategies at specific locations to enhance production and facilitate its broader adoption across the industry.
Another central focus of the agreement will be sharing best practices for reducing the use of single-use plastics, minimizing waste, and boosting energy efficiency in both ground and cargo operations. This initiative aims to accelerate the adoption of more sustainable operational practices by Cathay and SIA, enhancing their overall sustainability performance.

Cathay was one of the first airlines in Asia to set a target of 10% SAF for its total fuel consumption by 2030, and we are undertaking a multi-pronged approach to contribute to the aviation industry’s transition towards a greener future.”
